North Carolinian Wins Snap-on Dragster; Herbert Finishes Ninth in Final Top Fuel Points

POMONA, Calif., Nov. 9, 2003 - Jon Herring, a construction business owner from Elizabeth City, N.C., was the winner of Doug Herbert's season-long Win This Car contest Sunday at Pomona Raceway.

Herring - one of three finalists from thousands of entries - now owns a 2002 Snap-on Top Fuel dragster that carried Herbert to his career-best elapsed time and speed.

"I really don't know what to say," Herring, 31, said. "Only in America could an average Joe like me win something like this. I can't fathom it happening to me. I haven't even thought about what I'm going to do with the car."

In his spare time, Herring competes in truck pulling.

The other finalists were Gregg Scott, El Cajon, Calif., and Emil Dusek, Katy, Texas.

Herbert, meanwhile, ended his frustrating POWERade Series season with a first-round loss to Doug Kalitta in the Auto Club Finals Sunday and wound up ninth with 921 points.

It was his second setback to Kalitta in two days, the other coming in Saturday's first round of the Budweiser Shootout. Kalitta went on to win the $100,000 top prize.

Herbert left the starting line first (.041 to .076 seconds) Sunday but soon heard Kalitta coming. Kalitta won with a 4.495-second effort at 333.25 mph - the fastest speed in NHRA history - to Herbert's 4.671 at 297.48.

"Our performance was lackluster at best Sunday," said Herbert. "We will regroup our Snap-on team, get together and be ready for Pomona and the Winternationals in February (19-22)."
