POMONA, Calif. (November 12, 2004) -- As David Baca brings the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster to the line today for the second of four qualifying sessions, he is boosted by the fact that he ran a career best elapsed time in yesterday's opening qualifying sessions for the 40th annual NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.
Baca blazed the Pomona Raceway quarter-mile in 4.487 seconds at over 327 mph, finishing second on the qualifying ladder.
"We've always said that we are capable of running with the best and today's run proved us right," said Baca. "In my humble opinion I am surrounded by the best crew in all drag race. What we did today was a team effort. I was just the lucky guy that got to drive.
"Hopefully, this will make us stand out from the crowd as we continue looking for the financial wherewithal that will enable us to compete at the highest level possible next season. We have a brand new truck and trailer order that we hope to debut at the season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals and we would love to see the name of a Corporate America company on the side of that trailer."
Although he has run a limited schedule this year, entering the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway, Baca is lucky No. 13 with 587 points.
With Rick Henkelman calling the tuning shots there are three qualifying sessions remaining. Today's second session of qualifying for the fuel cars begins at 3 p.m. Two additional sessions are scheduled on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. Baca's quest for the Top Fuel title starts on Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m. All times are local Pomona time (PST) and subject to change at anytime.
