SKULL Gear/Torco Racing Fuels Cobalt Slows in Best Session

POMONA, Calif., Nov. 11, 2006 -- Crew chief Tommy Utt stepped up and explained why Dave Connolly's last qualifying attempt in ideal conditions for Sunday's Auto Club Finals at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona was slower than anticipated.

"I didn't get the wheelie bar set right," Utt lamented. The result was another 6.70-second run (6.703 at 206.39 mph) -- the team's fourth in the four sessions. But other teams improved and Connolly slipped from fifth to ninth place.

Connolly finished with a best of 6.700 seconds at 206.26 mph. He races Greg Stanfield (No. 8, 6.699 at 206.04 mph) in a closely-bunched Pro Stock field.

"That's a tight group of cars," said Connolly. "The car went left at the hit of the throttle and got out of the groove. There isn't much of a groove here anyway. It's disappointing because we had run in the top four or five all weekend and now we lost lane choice for the first round. The good news is we know we can run better Sunday. We drew a tough driver, but they are all tough in this category."
