Advance Auto Parts Machine Claims Seventh After First Session

POMONA, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2005) -- Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car started out strong for this weekend's 40th Anniversary Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.

Pedregon lapped the historic Pomona Raceway in 4.796 seconds at 324.51 mph, taking the provisional seventh slot. With three more sessions to go, Pedregon feels like the team is in a great position to move up.

"Any time you can run in the 4.70s during a weekend, you've done something well," Pedregon said. "And to do it on the first run really sets you up well for the rest of the weekend.

"Believe it or not, we were a little conservative on that run as well," Pedregon continued. "We did that because the engine acted a little funny in Vegas. Everything looked good today and I think it takes the pressure off. We have the car that can go after that low 4.70 because that's what it's going to take to get that No. 1 spot. It would be nice to get that second No. 1 qualifier of the year and we're in a position to do that now."

Due to time restrictions, Pedregon will have one qualifying session tomorrow.

TRACK CONDITONS: Pomona Raceway has a long history, as evidenced by this weekend's 40th Anniversary Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Despite its age, recent renovations have transformed the track surface into one of the circuit's best.

Cruz Pedregon, who drives the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car entry, commented on track conditions, which was disrupted with intermittent rain showers.

"This track has become, over the last four or five years, one of the premier track out there," Pedregon said. "It was definitely damp out there, but it didn't have any effect on how we ran at all."
