Hill stays fast, advances to quarterfinals

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 6) -- The battle for the Top Fuel title of the 39th Annual AutoZone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway began with an exceptionally quick first round of elimination action. Four of the eight drivers that advanced to the Round 2 posted quarter mile elapsed times in the 4.5-second range.

Eddie Hill, the pilot of the Pennzoil Top Fuel Dragster, won his first round race against Don Lampus with an incredible 4.545-second pass at 303.57 mph. Hill's impressive elapsed time was the second quickest time posted in the first round and will award Hill lane choice over Budweiser driver Kenny Bernstein in the quarterfinals. Bernstein posted a 4.751-second, 316.38-mph lap in his first round win over Doug Kalitta.

"I love it when our two best passes, this one and Friday night's run, have identical half-track elapsed times (of 3.034 seconds)," Hill said. "That tells me that we have a real good grip on what the car is doing. Especially since one was a daytime run and the other one was at night. If we stay this consistent and this quick, we should have a long day of work ahead. That's what we're hoping for.

"It's great to have lane choice in the second round because I consider it to be the trickiest round of the day. It's when the track is usually at its warmest and most unpredictable. Kenny is a great driver and I've raced him enough to know that we'll have to be right on target to beat him. May the best man win."
