GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS WIN FOUR TIMES IN NHRA SEASON OPENER
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2004) -- Four drivers rode Goodyear tires to victory in the National Hot Rod Association's season opening Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. It was a record-setting event that indicated the 2005 season could well be the most competitive in drag racing history.
Scott Kalitta, Tommy Johnson Jr., Dave Connolly and Don Little were the Goodyear winners.
Little won in Super Stock, where tiremakers compete against each other. Little's victory in the final round against Brad Plourd was largely because of his terrific reaction time, just .014 of a second. Little's victory margin was just .0603 of a second.
Connolly collected his fourth career victory and had to beat Warren Johnson in the final round. The Pro Stock class is also open to competition among tiremakers, but every Pro Stock car that entered the race used Goodyear tires.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for the NHRA's Top Fuel and Funny Car classes.
Tony Schumacher rocketed down the Pomona quarter mile during Saturday's qualifying session and recorded the second-fastest speed in Top Fuel history, 334.65 mph. But the defending Top Fuel champion was knocked out in the second round of eliminations.
Kalitta won the Top Fuel final when he beat Doug Herbert. The victory was Kalitta's 17th and his fifth in nine tries against Herbert.
Johnson won in Funny Car and performed when he had to, recording his career-best elapsed time in the final against Phil Burkhart.
