Big Names Stack Up As NHRA'S Opener At Pomona Looms
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2007) -- The storylines for the NHRA's 2007 season opener simply smack you right in the face. The event, the Carquest Auto Parts Winternationals, will be held at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona Feb. 8-11.
The Powerade Racing Series professional classes are scheduled to make qualifying attempts once each on Thursday and Friday and twice on Saturday, setting the field for Sunday's eliminations.
Drivers racing on Goodyear tires won six NHRA national championships last season and won four other major drag racing national titles in 2006. Many of those champions will be in the field at Pomona, but this year's season opener is about so much more. Goodyear tires are part of the story.
Kenny Bernstein, who is ranked among the greatest drag racers of all time, and Ashley Force, daughter of 14-time NHRA titleholder John Force, join the Funny Car ranks for 2007. Given the number of strong teams in the category, just qualifying for the 16-car eliminations field will be an arduous task.
Tony Schumacher, who won the 2006 Top Fuel title with perhaps the greatest clutch performance in sports history, goes to Pomona with that experience behind him and the knowledge that every top shoe in the Top Fuel universe goes to Pomona dead even with him.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for the Funny Car and Top Fuel categories.
Jason Line, the 2007 Pro Stock champion, has to beat his own teammate before he worries about the remainder of the Pro Stockers. Line's teammate is three-time champion Greg Anderson. The other teams in the category are bunched so tightly together that victory margins are frequently measured in inches instead of fractions of seconds.
The Pro Stock category is open to competition among tiremakers, but it has been decades since any tire other than Goodyear was on a wining car.
The Lucas Oil Racing Series for sportsman racers will have six categories in competition at Pomona. Those categories are open to competition among tire companies and the competition is fierce.
Teams in both the professional and sportsman classes know that the tougher the competition, the more important it is to make Goodyear their choice for tires.
