Pomona, Calif. (February 6, 2000) - The NHRA Pro Stock Truck season began this weekend at Pomona Raceway with all three GMC Sonoma Racing competitors showing tremendous promise for the 2000 campaign. John Lingenfelter put in one of the Sonoma brand's best qualifying efforts since its introduction into the NHRA Pro Stock Truck series last March. Lingenfelter's Summit Racing Sonoma qualified in the No. 6 position with an elapsed time of 7.577 seconds at 177.88 mph and had lane choice in a first round win over Taylor Lastor. In round two, Lingenfelter once again had lane choice, but ignition problems put an early end to his day. "We think something happened in the ignition because the No. 2 cylinder is dead," Lingenfelter said. "But we haven't seen any other problems so it's either the spark plug or the lead, or the ignition itself. Then we also broke the transmission itself. We lost fifth gear so we were doomed from the start no matter what. We're about to find out about the transmission here in a few minutes. Other than that we had a pretty good weekend. "We went a round today and coming in e may have been one of the favorites to win. We're happy. Our goal is to constantly improve and with the guys we have I just think that by mid season the Summit Racing Sonoma will be very competitive." Country Motor Trailer Sales driver Rick Jones also advanced to the second round in his GMC Sonoma before going down to defeat. Jones knocked off Brad Jeter in round one before losing to Greg Stanfield. "I think we found some things we can build on here. We got the Country Motor Trailer Sales Sonoma qualified, won a round and made a lot of progress. We're pretty happy. We made a decent run in the first round this morning, made some changes and the truck responded. It actually ran pretty well for that right lane. We just couldn't get out of that right lane and the left side was definitely better by a couple of hundredths. "These guys are tough but we're making strides and learning. Hopefully we can take it a step further at the next race. You have some heavy hitters out there going in the low 7.50s and it's pretty tough to keep up with that. We just tried something a little different that didn't work. We learned what this truck needs and what it will take, go do some testing at Gainesville and get ready to race again. We'll have another motor and some new work done on the chassis and we'll be ready." David Spitzer's effort in the Sunnen/Dynagear GMC also contributed to the Sonoma brand's success this weekend. Spitzer entered final eliminations qualified in the No. 7 spot but lost in round one to Jeff Garcia. "Really except for a couple guys, I think the Sunnen Sonoma was fairly fast in the first session," Spitzer said. "We made some headway, and the new motor looks like it's going to be pretty good, so we'll just have to spend some time on the dyno, maybe do a little testing before Gainesville and come out swinging there." After the first race of the year, there are three GMC Sonoma drivers in the Winston top 10. John Lingenfelter is fifth with 54 points, Rick Jones is seventh with 52 points and David Spitzer is 10th with 33 points. Race winner Bob Panella leads the standings in an S-10 with 117 points, Greg Stanfield is second in an S-10 with 95 points, Steve Johns is third in an S-10 with 78 points and John Coughlin is fourth in an S-10 with 76 points. The next stop on the Pro Stock Truck tour is the 31st annual Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway Park in Gainesville, Fla., on March 16 - 19. It is the second stop on the 14-event NHRA Pro Stock Truck tour. Television coverage of the final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, March 19, beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern. Qualifying highlights can be seen on Saturday, March 18 beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.
