Hello Pomona, Good-bye 1999 Drag Racing Season, Hopeful in 2000
The never-ending roller coaster of NHRA Pro Stock Drag Racing is familiar to every single driver & team on the tour. The Gillig Motorsports, Shanahan Dry Wall Services, Wayne's Pizza Olds Cutlass with Tony Gillig at the helm is no different. It's been a tough season, but it also has its rewards for the newcomer to NHRA, as Gillig experienced in Memphis by going a few rounds for the first time.
"It's been a great season. My Dad & Crew Chief Bob & I would not trade a second of what we've been through this year in for anything. It's been a learning year, a hectic year, and we've made a lot of great friends along the way." Gillig jokes, "No we did not take NHRA Pro Stock Drag Racing to another level, we never thought we would. I think some of our friends thought we could though." "Its tough here, I would have to be delusional not to know that going in. The field here is so tight and consistent."
"Accomplishing what we did this year has been great. I'd like to go out with a bang here in Pomona€¦we'll have to see I guess. Pomona is an awesome track, anything can happen here even for us!"
The Gillig Motorsports team is planning on coming back for the 2000 season. "The team is looking forward to coming back next year. We are going to make a few changes, as I'm sure everyone will. However, for now...we can't wait for the end of this season. Going from IHRA's 12-event season to this killer NHRA 23-event schedule is hectic. It will be nice to kick back for a couple of months." Tony goes on to say, "We need to give some of our employees at Wayne's some time off they have worked darn hard while we've been on the road, we want to thank them for that!" "Its time to regroup, pay attention to friends and loved ones who have been VERY patient, and rejuvenate ourselves for the NHRA 2000 Drag Racing Season!"
