POMONA, Calif. - Federal Mogul Dragster team owner and driver Duane Shields stepped up his performance on Friday's last day of qualifying, but remained in the eighth spot with an elapsed time of 5.546 at 250.92 miles per hour when qualifying concluded Friday evening of the AAA Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif. Severe tireshake caused teammate Dale Carlson not to improve on his 5.731 at 248.75 mph that he ran on Thursday, leaving him on the outside looking in the 17th spot.
Shields, of Las Vegas, hurt a motor in the morning's first session and was forced to put his backup motor in for the last qualifying session. The backup block split in several places just after the launch, killing his chances of improvement.
"In the first run, we were a little bit more aggressive, and actually ran well, but the burst panel right before the lights," said Shields. "When we got back and looked at the motor, we discovered that the bolts had sheered off the cam. We decided to change motors, and torched the head about 200' into the run with that motor, and that ended qualifying for us."
"Dale's car just had too much tire shake this weekend. It shook so hard yesterday that it broke all the computer mounts among other things. It ultimately caused our manifold problem from the last race to come back, and we knew that going into the run. We put the bigger Goodyear tires on it hoping to cure the shake, and it did, but the manifold blew the o-ring out, which let all the boost go at the end of the run, so he did not improve on his .73, and didn't make the field. It was on a pretty good pass, but that ended our weekend on that car."
Shields will face No. 9 qualifier Steve Faria's A/Fuel Dragster in round one today. Shields hopes to use consistency to bring him the win.
"We're going to leave it pretty much like it was on the last run," explained Shields. "We want to go out there and run a low .50 and make them earn it."
The Federal Mogul Dragsters will run first round at 2:30 p.m. today. Final eliminations will follow tomorrow. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for round by round updates on the action from Pomona.
