HERBERT DRIVES INTO SECOND PLACE WITH FINAL-ROUND APPEARANCE AT SEASON OPENER
POMONA, Calif. -- Not bad. Not bad at all. He has a new crew chief, a new team and with a solid performance all weekend, he surely has some new fans too.
Doug Herbert and the Snap-on team turned in quite a show Sunday at Pomona Raceway. Herbert went to the final round of the season-opening Winternationals, his career-best start to an NHRA season.
"This is the best start I've ever had and that's exciting. The tune-up was good, the team was good, the car was good and the tools were good too," Herbert said. "We had a great weekend. Only one person left the race in a better position than we did."
Herbert beat David Baca in the first round with a 4.554-second pass at 323.04, defending Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher in the second round (4.551 at 326.00) and Morgan Lucas in the semifinal (5.035 at 254.38) before falling to Scott Kalitta in the Top Fuel final. Kalitta went 4.487 at 328.46 to beat Herbert's 5.371 at 181.84.
"I go into every race thinking that this Snap-on team is going to win," Herbert said. "So I'm only slightly disappointed this weekend but I know this isn't going to be the only time this crew puts the Snap-on dragster in the final. We have such a great group of guys and having Rob Flynn and Jim Brissette working together on the tune-up is already working out great."
Kalitta has the points lead with 116 points. Herbert is close behind with 92 points.
"To leave the first race of the season in second place with a final-round finish is a great thing," Herbert said. "I had never been to the final round at the Winternationals before and it would have been nice to win, but we had a slight problem on that last pass. We'll get that fixed before Phoenix and get after it again."
Herbert and the rest of the NHRA POWERade Series will be at Firebird International Raceway for the CSK Nationals next, in Phoenix Feb. 25-27.
