POMONA,CA (Feb. 2) -- Hoping to pick up where they left off after an opening run of 4.63 seconds on Thursday, Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster picked up .32 of a second during Friday's qualifying session to move into second place at the 41st Annual Autozone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway.
Crew Chief Dick LaHaie was able to eliminate what minimal errors there were from Dixon's first qualifying lap of the season on Thursday (4.632 seconds at 303.84 mph) as he tuned the No. 91 car to a time of 4.600 seconds at 316.82 mph to move up from third place to second overall on the Top Fuel qualifying ladder. Dixon was among the few top drivers that were able to significantly improve his time and speed, picking up .32 of asecond and nearly 13 mph.
"I'm satisfied that we ran quicker but I don't think that everyonen the o Miller Lite Team is totally satisfied," said Dixon. "We need n the to run in the 4.50s. If the track can handle a 4.57, then we ought to be able to run that. The areas that we had trouble with yesterday, fuel system wise and speedwise, we were able to fix that today and that's why our car picked up close to 15 mph, so we are definitely happy about that. For tomorrow we will just try and finesse it more and see if we can't go for that No. 1 qualifying spot."
Doug Kalitta sits as the next driver to run quicker than Dixon with a top time of 4.578 seconds at 315.71 mph. Dixon's Snake Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. currently owns the top spot in the Funny Car field with a lap of 4.838 seconds at 310.98 mph while Prudhomme's third driver, Ron Capps, is currently 17th (5.410 seconds at 206.01 mph).
