After cementing his place in the AutoZone Winternationals field with a 6.886-second effort on Friday, Tom Martino and the CENTURY 21( Firebird Racing Team turned their focus on preparing their car for Sunday's final eliminations. The result was two strong 6.915-second runs, and the end of qualifying found Martino in the third position and the only Pro Stock entry to top the 200 mph mark so far this weekend. This set up a first-round encounter with Mike Trumble, whom Martino has never faced.

"After "banking" the 6.88 yesterday, we used today's sessions to work on our CENTURY 21( Firebird's race set-up. We may not have made it any better, but we learned a lot about adjusting our car to the conditions and this Pomona track.

"The last run today was pretty good. We changed the four-link around a little and the car really didn't like it. It was a little stronger down track, but just made it too slow at the starting line. I think if we had left it alone, and just made our normal car changes, it probably would have run an '89 or '90. For tomorrow, we'll put it back the way it was and try to improve our top end performance a different way.

"What's important is that we've taken the first step - we qualified in the top half of the field. Tomorrow, we move on to the next challenge - going rounds."
