POMONA, Calif. - Defending NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion Bruce Bowler will be looking for his first national event win during this weekend's AutoZone Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. Not only will Bowler be looking for the win, but has his sights set on the National Championship in 2001.
Bowler, who resides in Denver, finished the 2000 season by qualifying No. 3 at the season-ending AAA Auto Club Finals in Pomona with a great elapsed time of 5.452 at 258.37 mph. He also picked up two late season divisional wins on his way to the Division 5 Championship in Noble, Okla., and Phoenix.
"This weekend our goal is pretty pure and simple: get our first national event win," said Bowler. "We ran some 5.30's last year, and we have some new equipment we are going to try that we think will help us build more power in the motor. So, we're really looking to get into the 5.30's at around the 270 mph mark. David Baca ran in the 5.20's here last year. I think we can get there, I don't think that is out of our reach at all."
This year, Bowler plans to put more emphasis on the national event schedule to make a run at the National Championship.
"Our main interest this year is to try to do better on the National level," commented Bowler. "That's where we are putting most of our energy this year. Not that we are ignoring the divisional races, because those points also add into your national standings, so those races are important too. You just have to put your mindset into that national event scene, and get used to that kind of environment and that kind of competition."
"We certainly are going to try to protect our Championship standing in Division 5," continued Bowler. "In addition to keeping the Division 5 title, our goal is to make a beeline for the World Championship this year. We know now that the car has the capability of winning wherever we go, and we're really going to put the 'full court' press on to take the No. 1 from Rick Santos."
