Martino qualifies 9th, looks to make noise on Saturday in Pomona
Date: Friday, July 6, 2001
Location: Pomona Raceway, Pomona, CA
Tom Martino put the finishing touches on a successful qualifying effort at the Pep Boys 50th NHRA Anniversary Nationals with his best run on his final pass. The CENTURY 21 Pro Stock Grand Am Racing Team bounced back from a mechanical malfunction on Thursday night to post a competitive 6.99-second pass on his first attempt on Friday afternoon. The Farmingdale, NJ native then closed out his time trials by taking advantage of the cooler evening temperatures and powered down the Pomona Raceway quarter-mile in 6.959 seconds with a top speed of 198.73 mph. This placed Martino 9th for Saturday's unique nighttime eliminations and set the stage for a first round encounter with friend and rival George Marnell.
"We're going in the right direction with this Century 21 Grand Am, but we just can't seem to get it off the starting line. We're making great runs from second gear to the finish line, which accounts for our good elapsed times, but we have do better in the first sixty feet. We know we have to fix it, but we're in disagreement as to exactly how to do it, because we're not quote sure what it causing it. One of us is right, but we just don't know which one. We might just leave it alone and tune it up slightly for tomorrow and take it from there.
"The problem last night didn't affect us as much as it could have, because it happened after the area where we've had problems, so we have the notes from that run to study. The only missed benefit was not being able to go back to the hotel last night further up the qualifying ladder.
"I'm not going to let George beat me three times this year. He may be one of my better friends in the Pro Stock pits, but I'm sorry, because I'm going to do everything I can to send him back to Las Vegas tomorrow."
