Wells hoping to get jump start this weekend at Route 66
JOLIET, Ill. - Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells will be looking to get a 'jump start' on this year's NHRA Division 5 season at this weekend's Division 3 opener at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. Wells hopes not only to get a run on points, but to carry some momentum into next weekend's Division 5 opener in Topeka, Kan., in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster.
Wells, who helps run the family ice cream business in LeMars, Iowa, became the second B/AD to run in the 5.30's during his win at the O'Reilly Fall Nationals last year in Dallas. Wells and team have not been able to find that performance again at their first two outings of the year, but hope to get back into the 5.30's again this weekend.
"We've been working on the clutch problems we've had," said Wells. "We found some things while putting the clutch on the grinder, and hopefully that will help our problems. Hopefully that will turn the car around, and make it start to run again."
Route 66 Raceway is regarded as one of the best racetracks in the country, if not the best in some circles. Wells hopes to take a combination of a good track, a good weather forecast, and Tom Conway tuning to the winner's circle on Sunday.
"We should be able to get right down there around a .38 or .39, if the weather is decent," commented Wells. "We may be able to go even a little quicker."
Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, with two more qualifying sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com for round by round updates of the action from Joliet.
