Chandler, Ariz., March 6, 2004 -- Reigning Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon saved his best qualifying effort for the last session today, powering his Quaker State Chevrolet Camaro to an elapsed time of 4.881 seconds at 310.27 mph to finish eighth quickest.
"That's what we've been looking for all weekend," said Pedregon. b^0x001cIt was a nice solid pass from start to finish. It gives us something to build on for the race tomorrow.
"Being in the top-half of the field is always important. It gives you lane choice for one which can be very important throughout the entire day but you're guaranteed that lane choice for first round. So, we're extremely pleased with the performance and look forward to going some rounds tomorrow."
For the first time this season, as teammates Tony and brother Cruz will have to face each other in the first round of final eliminations tomorrow in what is sure to be one of the most exciting first round match ups. Cruz's pass from the Friday night session of 4.900 seconds at 311.99 mph placed him right behind Tony in ninth. Tony has a 12-7 advantage in head-to-head meetings with Cruz.
"Well, it's not exactly what we planned but at least one of us will get a win out of it," said Pedregon. b^0x001cOur cars are very similar in setups so it's going to be a good race. Its all heads up with Cruz and I, and you can guarantee that we both want to win it."
Gary Densham earned the low qualifier award with an elapsed time of 4.773 seconds at 323.04 mph.
Television coverage of final eliminations can be seen on Sunday, March 7 from 7:00 p.m. -- 10:00 p.m. (ET)
