Team Hammonds shoots for better results in Phoenix
(HOLT, Fla., Feb. 20, 2008) -- Team Hammonds did not fair well to start the 2008 NHRA season in Pomona, Calif. at Winternationals by not qualifying for elimination Sunday, but they seek to turn things around in Phoenix at the 24th Annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals, Feb. 22-24.
Team Hammonds is coming into the competition with the necessary tools to be among those racing on elimination Sunday, according to Crew Chief Jerry Eckman. "With a good Team like this, coupled with good speed and equipment, the outcome at Pomona was not what we expected. We have tested to make sure we will not be combating the same problems for the upcoming weekend."
Recording a best elapse time of 6.721 seconds (207.24 mph) in the fourth qualifying session of the competition, Hammonds placed 17th in the field missing the elimination round by one slot. His Winternationals runs were affected by his Chevy Cobalt suffering from tire shake, excessive tire spinning and unsuccessful attempts to level an aggressive clutch.
"We are concentrating on making sure our set-ups are in line to give us better 60 feet runs. It is important for our first half run to be as strong as our back half to remain competitive," says Hammonds. "We were able to test without making full runs, which were successful; therefore, we are looking to be a part of race day Sunday in Phoenix."
Hammonds is scheduled to compete in the first round of qualifying in the pro stock car class at the Firebird International Speedway on Friday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.
