CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES CSK NATIONALS FIREBIRD INTL RACEWAY NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SUNDAY, FEB. 28, 1999
FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28 -- FINAL ELIMINATIONS
WHIT BAZEMORE, KENDALL MOTOR OIL/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, was eliminated in the semifinals by Cruz Pedregon, 4.918/299.13 for Pedregon, 5.052/305.42 for Bazemore.
BAZEMORE: "It's obviously disappointing to lose, but you have to expect that it's going to happen some during the year. But this Kendall Camaro team I think is really, really good. The key, at this point in the season is not to lose in the first round. It's very important when you want to contend for an NHRA Funny Car championship to go rounds. And at the end of the year when you look back at the big picture, going into the third round in the second race of the year is not a bad situation at all. It's positive. It's a good weekend. Everyone did a good job on this team. We had to change motors before this semifinal round (hurt the rear main bearing). The Camaro didn't do what we expected it to do."
ON ADJUSTING TO THE NEW CAR: "I'm coming to terms with this car a lot and this team has really accepted me, from Chuck and Shelley to Tim and Kim, all the way down. I think it's a very strong team. I'm still pinching myself that I'm a kid and that I'm driving for Tim Richards. It's a dream come true. I won't harp on that because it might give Tim a big head." ON THAT RUN: "Against Cruz we were ready. It didn't look like he was ready (slower reaction time). I still think it's the faster car out here at this point. (John) Force's car is really good, but the Interstate car was the best car last year. I'd like to get this Kendall Camaro up there where we have the best car and the best driver. It's a lot of hard work and it is not impossible that we can achieve that. That's always going to be our goal. Whether you achieve it or not is the question, but you always try to get there."
ON FORCE KNOCKING OFF THE SERIES OF 4.8s. IS THIS AN INDICATION OF WHAT YOU'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH ALL YEAR? "I think it is. They're obviously a little bit ahead of everyone else technology-wise. I'm fairly positive that we can catch them, because we still have some new technology on this Kendall Camaro and when we make that next step, the way Tim Richards runs this show and his methodical approach, I know it will make us successful. I know that when we ran the new technology last year I know the difference it can make. I don't know what Force is doing, I know what we're doing and I know the potential we have. It's tremendous. It's going to take some work, some testing, a little trial and error, we'll fall a few steps back, but ultimately it will be 10 steps forward. We're going to be doing that very soon. And we will have our new '99 Camaro soon. And what Force's team is doing now shows you the advantage the other (older) Mustang still had. The old Mustang that they cried and whined about that was 'no good', it really was good because we won races with it and they won races with it. We won races on bad tracks with it. Now they changed the rules to give them an advantage, and look what happens. We have to redesign our new Camaro and it will help us. Essentially we are racing a '98 Camaro built under '97 rules."
