DIXON POSTS FIRST-ROUND FINISH AT PHOENIX

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 27, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to a first-round performance Sunday at Firebird International Raceway.

Dixon, who claimed his first career victory at F.I.R. 10 years ago, used the second best reaction time of round one of Top Fuel eliminations (.059) to take the early lead over opponent David Grubnic. Dixon's Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster powered to a run of 4.551 seconds at 325.69 mph, however Grubnic's dragster clocked a slightly quicker pass of 4.534 at 324.36 to score the round win in one of the day's closest matchups. Dixon's 4.551 effort was his second quickest elapsed time of the weekend.

"It's a downer," Dixon said. "We had a package that would have beaten all but a few cars out of the 16 in the field. We had a fuel system malfunction and had we won the round, we could have fixed that and made an adjustment and run low 4.50s again. We just got beat. Like I always say, there's a million ways to lose a drag race and only one way to win."

Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite/Lucas Oil-backed race team will regroup at their Brownsburg, Ind. race shop before heading south to the Sunshine State to compete at the 36th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals. Dixon is a three-time winner at the Florida track.
