Jeg Lands in The No. 3 Spot after Day One
Jeg Coughlin rolled into the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals looking to improve off of his second round defeat at the season opener.
The 33-year old two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion posted an opening qualifying run of 6.842 at 202.58 mph. The run was good enough to put the JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier into the No. 6 position.
"We made a pretty solid run and now we have some additional data that should help us continue to improve our tune up," explained Jeg. "We had a new engine sent directly from our shop to the track this morning. We didn't want to be too aggressive, since the engine is fresh. The engine should continue to get better for the next couple of runs. We just need to give the engine what it's asking for and improve our short times."
In the second of four scheduled qualifying sessions Jeg ran a 6.792 at 203.00 mph. The run was an improvement and the JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier moved to the No. 3 spot.
"We made a nice run and we left some on the table in the second session," said Jeg. "The car launch from the starting line and kind of kick off to the left at the 200-foot mark on the track. I didn't want to make a sudden move back to the center of groove. The Goodyear tires didn't let me down, they stuck to the track and helped us lay down a nice lap. We have the potential to see pretty strong numbers again tomorrow."
There are two remaining qualifying sessions before the field is set. The third session is scheduled for 1:00 PM and the final session is at 4:00 PM tomorrow (Saturday).
