Enders outside of qualifying with two runs left

PHOENIX -- Erica Enders might not sleep too well tonight. It could be the same kind of jitters that keep young children awake on Christmas Eve. She's that excited.

What's all the excitement about? Round three of qualifying for the CSK Nationals at Firebird International Raceway. She may not be qualified for the 16-car field for Sunday's eliminations right now, but that could change in less than seven seconds.

"I can't wait for noon tomorrow," the 21-year-old Houston resident said. "I hope the air is ready for us because the car will be ready. The incrementals on the first two runs of the day were great, we just didn't make a full, clean pass on either attempt.

"I'm not worried about it because I know we have the right crew and the right car and at noon tomorrow we'll be ready."

Enders did not qualify for the season opening event at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway and is anxious to race on Sunday. She currently sits in the No. 21 spot with a 6.839-second pass at 202.85 mph in the Cagnazzi Racing Chevy Cavalier.

The second run of the day was on pace to make the field before a small fuse didn't do its job.

"It's amazing how a tiny part worth less than a dollar can ruin a good pass, but that's what happened," Enders said. "The run started great. It launched well and then the further I got down the track, the looser the car felt. Before I got to fifth gear it sounded like the car blew the tires off and it started to try to turn left."

Regardless of the current qualifying position, Enders is happy with the way the team has come together so quickly.

"It would have been really nice to have two quick passes to our names at this race," Enders said. "But luckily there is still plenty of time for that to happen."

Qualifying continues Saturday with pro sessions at noon and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are set for 11 a.m. on Sunday. ESPN2 will air coverage of qualifying on Saturday (9 p.m. ET) and Sunday (7 p.m. ET).
