HERBERT TO START FROM THE NO. 3 SPOT
PHOENIX -- Doug Herbert will start from the No. 3 spot, the best start for the Snap-on Tools dragster team since they earned the same position at the Columbus race in June last year.
Herbert drove his Snap-on Tools dragster to a 4.499-second run at 330.63 mph to take the third qualifying position. He will face off with John Smith in the first round Sunday.
The best run came during the second session Friday night as the car smoked the tires on two attempts Saturday. Herbert said the smoke was still a good sign.
"We smoke the tires on both runs today (Saturday) because we were trying to improve on what we did Friday night and you can't learn anything if you don't try new setups," Herbert, a Lincolnton, N.C. resident, said. "We're going to be just fine on Sunday because we know what we did to run that 4.49 and we can go back to that setup."
The team managed just one top three qualifying position in 2004. With his runner-up finish in the season opening race two weeks ago, he's matched his final round appearances from 2004 as well -- another good sign.
"We're in a great spot to start the race tomorrow and I'm looking forward to making four good runs," Herbert said. "We learned a lot from the two runs today, even if we didn't make it all the way down the track. We keep getting better and better and this team is doing a great job.
"Now it's just a matter of stepping on the gas and getting it done. I'm always excited for Sundays."
Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. Sunday. All the action can be seen on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
