Herbert happy with career-best numbers
PHOENIX -- Doug Herbert may not have won Sunday's CSK Nationals at Firebird International Raceway, but he did experience some career-best numbers throughout the weekend.
Herbert and the Snap-on Tools dragster beat John Smith in the first round of Top Fuel action before losing to Morgan Lucas in the second round.
Herbert went 5.888 at 287.35 to beat John Smith's 5.910 at 243.33 in a tire-smoking affair that was won by Herbert's pedal work.
During qualifying, however, Herbert went 4.499-second at 330.63 mph, driving to the No. 3 spot and career-best numbers.
"We didn't win the race, but all in all, it was a great weekend because we ran the first 4.40 time of my career as well as the first 330," Herbert said. "We qualified high and we won a round.
"We won three rounds at the first race and if we can average a semifinal appearance at every race of the year this Snap-on team is going to have a great shot at winning the championship."
Lucas turned in a 4.517 pass at 324.12 to beat Herbert's 4.647 at 303.16 in the second round.
"We smoked the tires in the first round so we knew we were going to have to back the car down a bit just to get down the track," Herbert said. "They just had a faster car. When you get beat by a good run, all you can do is go over and shake their hands and tell them they did a good job. That's what we did."
Herbert is going to stay in Phoenix Monday for a quick test session before the team heads back to the shop in Lincolnton, N.C.
"We need to test some new stuff and learn how to run even quicker," Herbert said. "We have run career-best numbers at the first two events of the year and that says a lot about the great team we have. We just want to keep learning how to go faster and faster."
The final eliminations of the CSK Nationals can be seen tonight on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
