Baca qualifies No. 10 in Phoenix
CHANDLER, Ariz. - David Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., drove the American Racing/ 3-A- Day of Dairy/Dairy Farmers of Oregon dragster to No. 10 on the ladder as qualifying concluded today at Firebird International Raceway for the NHRA Checkers Schuck's Kragen Nationals, the second of 23-races on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Baca and team used Friday to set a base, then Saturday's weather changed and temperatures increased. This caused the majority of teams to lose traction in Saturday's opening session and Baca was in the majority. The base was out the window. All teams now had to contend with the heat.
"We're trying to find the right combination," said crew chief Johnny West. "We're already two races in the season and we need to make up eight hundredth of a second, then work it down from there. Someday it will come to us. It could be tomorrow but it will come to us."
Baca will face-off against Clay Millican in eliminations. Millican qualified No 7 with an elapsed time of 4.563 seconds, while Baca qualified with a best elapsed time of 4.627 seconds. Final eliminations start at 11 a.m. tomorrow when Top Fuel, followed by Funny Cars and Pro Stock, take to the track at Firebird.
