Schumacher get the best of Baca for the second consecutive race
CHANDLER, Ariz. - David Baca, driver of the American Racing/ 3-A- Day of Dairy/Dairy Farmers of Oregon dragster, advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Tony Schumacher at the NHRA Checkers Schuck's Kragen Nationals, the second of 23-races on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
En route Baca defeated the reigning IHRA Top Fuel champ Clay Millican in the opening round. Baca covered the Firebird International Raceway quarter-mile in 4.556 seconds, while Millican lost traction and coasted to the finish line in 6.556 seconds.
Against Schumacher, who qualified No. 2, Baca lost traction just after hitting the throttle and wisely shut off. Schumacher reached the finish line stripe in 4.569 seconds, trailed by Baca who crossed in 9.897 seconds.
Baca, who moved into a tie for sixth in the POWERade Top Fuel point standings, was also defeated by Schumacher at the running of the rain-delayed Winternationals last weekend.
"After the frustrating Saturday we had here during qualifying, to come out and run a 55 (4.55 seconds) in the opening run today shows how well this team is coming together," said Baca after facing Schumacher. "It shows how well (crew chief) Johnny West and Larry Meyer are working together. Last night, they locked themselves up in the office, sat down at the computer and developed a tune up for today. With the exception of getting a little aggressive in the second round, things went our way.
"We're two rounds ahead of last year and sixth in points heading to Gainesville (Fla.). That's the West-Meyer factor. We're going to start going some rounds. We'll be okay."
Catch the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports American Racing/ 3-A- Day of Dairy/Dairy Farmers of Oregon Top Fuel dragster on TV tonight when ESPN2 airs three (3) hours of eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET).
Next up for David Baca and team is the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla. The event will unfold March 18-21.
