Collins Racing Misses the Cut in Phoenix
PHOENIX (Feb 27) -- The Collins Racing team had high hopes of making the field for the 15th Annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals this weekend at Firebird International Raceway, but will have to pack up and head back to Virginia early instead. Both of the Collins Racing team drivers failed to make it to the elimination rounds of the four-day event.
Here's a recap of each driver's pass from the final round of qualifying:
Shawn Collins, the primary driver on the Collins Racing Pro Stock team who was driving Mike Thomas' Pennzoil back-up car this race, failed to make the 16-car field. Collins' first run of 7.025 seconds at 196.47 mph that had him in the starting field after the first two qualifying sessions fell this morning after Round 3. He finished the event in the 20th position.
"It's just one of those things," said Collins. "We had high hopes for this weekend but between the heat and track conditions, it just didn't happen. All we can do now is go test some more and prepare for Gainesville. I hope to have my new car by then and then maybe we can start making some races."
Richie "The Kid" Stevens, driver of the Collins Racing Valspar Refinish Pontiac Firebird, after battling mechanical problems for most of the weekend, missed the cut by a fraction and ended the event in the 18th position.
"I was so close to being in the field," said Stevens. "It just wasn't my weekend. We had to change motors three times and the last one developed a miss at the last moment. I'm disappointed but I'll go test with the crew next week and we'll get in the field at Gainesville."
