Collins Racing Disappointed with Round 3

PHOENIX (Feb 27) -- Round 3 of qualifying for the15th Annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals couldn't have been held on a prettier day in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. As the Pro Stock cars lined up for their runs, Team Collins hopes of improving their starting spots for Sunday's elimination rounds in this session would have to wait for the final round.

Here's a recap of each driver's pass from Round 3:

Shawn Collins, the primary driver on the Collins Racing Pro Stock team who is driving Mike Thomas' Pennzoil back-up car this race, had a disappointing run in Round 3. After hoping that he would be able to better his time from yesterday, Collins slowed a bit and was bumped from the 16-car field to the 19th position.

"It wasn't a pretty run," said Collins. "I pulled the 'chute early and it lifted the rear of the car, I almost didn't get it stopped. I'm just outside the field, so we still have a shot. I'm just hoping for a large cloud to go over when I go out for the final round because it's going to be hot."

Richie "The Kid" Stevens, driver of the Collins Racing Valspar Refinish Pontiac Firebird, had a decent run of 7.018 seconds at 196.67 mph, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the 16-car field. Stevens moved up from yesterday's runs and is currently in the 17th position.

"I had a good run," said Stevens, "it just wasn't fast enough. The crew is going to change motors again so hopefully this will be the ticket to making the field for tomorrow's event. All I can do is hope."
