CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES ATSCO NATIONALS FIREBIRD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY SATURDAY, FEB. 21, 1998
RON CAPPS, '97 COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28 FUNNY CAR, 8th qualifier, 5.235/273.30 -- making the field after qualifying 17th in the first run. "Phew! Things were shaking. The car went out there and shook, shook, shook -- the track was so cold. I thought it wasn't getting any better. I started to pedal it, it took off. It started going right towards the guardrail, but I wasn't about to lift. I thought I might have to use the guardrail as a bumper. I'm not trying to think about being number one, but it takes its toll. Last year I tried to pedal it almost every run, and now I'm thinking in the back of my mind, we're in the points lead, we have a legitimate shot at being world champion. It's early to be saying that, but it gives you a little more pressure on your shoulders."
CHUCK ETCHELLS, '98 KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28 FUNNY CAR, No. 2 qualifier, 5.064/303.54. Etchells was No. 1 qualifier in today's first qualifying run. "We made two good runs in a row. We will take that. The '98 Camaro was very consistent. I didn't see him (Al Hofmann, polesitter, who was paired with Etchells in that run) until about 300 feet. He made a pretty hard move there. Right at the finish line we held right where we were right through the lights. We didn't try as hard on that run because we knew the left lane was not as good as the right. We just wanted to have a good number."
KURT JOHNSON, ACDelco '98 CAMARO Z28 PRO STOCK, No. 4 qualifier, 6.991/197.28, continues to be the fastest and quickest Pro Stock Camaro driver in history. In today's first qualifying session, Kurt tied with Mark Osborne for lowest e.t. (7.004), but Osborne was credited with the No. 1 qualifying spot because of his faster speed. In the second qualifying round, Kurt bettered his e.t., but so did three other drivers (Osborne fell to sixth). "Just a little at a time (on developing the Camaro body to the chassis). We ran quicker, but we actually ended up back two spots. We're not too disappointed with it. We feel we have two hundredths (of a second) left in it. We didn't know how much the track would take in the left lane as bad as it was this morning. We were tip-toeing through there. It could have taken more, so we have a pretty good setup for tomorrow morning." ON SETTING LOWER E.T. AT POMONA (6.97) BUT QUALIFYING 11TH THERE: "Every track is a little different, the air is different. As long as we're in the show on Sunday, that's all that matters."
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS '98 CAMARO Z28 PRO STOCK, failed to qualify (7.047/195.69 -- 18th qualifier). # # #
