SECOND ROUND LOSS TO MIKE NEFF ENDS RUN FOR TASCA AND MOTORCRAFT/QUICK LANE TEAM -- TASCA LEAVES PHOENIX SIXTH IN STANDINGS
Phoenix, AZ., Feb 22, 2009 -- In his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car, Bob Tasca III, attacked Firebird International Raceway with a new confidence. That confidence was evident when Tasca ran the fastest time of his Funny Car career in first round of eliminations (4.095 seconds/302.41mph).
Last year on Phoenix race day, Tasca was in the movie theater. This year, he was trackside after piloting his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car to a seventh place qualifying effort in 4.10 seconds at 301.94 miles per hour. The Phoenix qualifying time marks the second top-10 start for Tasca in 2009.
"It's a great way to start the season for us. We always want to win the race, but at the end of the day, it's about getting in and staying in the top-10 and putting ourselves in a position to run the championship," said Tasca.
In a first time, first round matchup, Tasca faced Jerry Toliver, in eliminations on Sunday. Tasca defeated Toliver with a run of 4.095 seconds at 302.14 milers per hour and advanced to the second round where Tasca faced fellow Ford driver Mike Neff.
In the second round, Tasca ran a 4.122 second run at 301 miles per hour and lost to Neff. Mike Neff would face Ron Capps in the final and finish second overall.
"I got a hole shot on Mike Neff and we would have beat four of the seven cars in the second round, unfortunately, we happened to run against Mike, who had one of the quickest runs this weekend," said Tasca.
"Overall, we're pleased with our result this weekend. We moved up to sixth in the points. Crew chief Chris Cunningham made some great calls this weekend and we've got some momentum coming out of the first two races of the season. We're heading out to Gainesville in a few weeks and that's a track that I really love. I set the record there in my alcohol car. We've always done well in Gainesville and I'm looking forward to improving on our performance at that race."
Tasca leaves Phoenix sixth in points. Ron Capps went on to win the 25th Annual Lucas Oil Slick Mist Nationals in Phoenix.
