INDIANAPOLIS -- Paul Romine and his CARQUEST Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster team will return to NHRA Winston Drag Racing competition, May 29-31, at the Inaugural Fram Route 66 Nationals at the newly constructed Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. (near Chicago).
Entering the Chicagoland area event, the CARQUEST team has competed in four of the nine NHRA national events this season. At the prestigious NHRA Winston Invitational in Rockingham, N.C., Romine qualified 5th with a career best 4.660 elapsed time and advanced to his first ever NHRA final round where he lost to Kenny Bernstein. The CARQUEST dragster last appeared on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing trail at the Pennzoil Nationals in Richmond, Va. At that event, Romine advanced to the semi-finals were NHRA points leader Cory McClenathan defeated him.
"Other than the disappointments at Gainesville where we didn't qualify and at Atlanta where we went out in round one, we couldn't have ask for anything better success than we've had this year in NHRA competition," Romine said. "It would have been nice to win Rockingham, but still to have advanced to the final of drag racing's all star event, that's something to be proud of. Then advancing to the semi-finals at Richmond, everyone now knows who we are so we won't be able to sneak up on anyone anymore."
Qualifying for the NHRA Fram Route 66 Nationals will begin Friday, May 29 with qualification sessions scheduled at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (CDT). The final two sessions of qualifying will be held Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled to begin Sunday, May 31 at 11 a.m.
The Nashville Network (TNN) will televise a half hour of qualifying highlights, Sunday, May 31 beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT). Complete coverage of the Fram Route 66 Nationals will air on TNN, Sunday, May 31 at 5 p.m. with a two hour show of highlights and final eliminations.
