POMONA, Calif. - After a successful first outing with the Darien & Meadows team in testing, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Paul Jones is fired up about competing at this weekend's K&N Filters Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. Jones, a former blown alcohol driver, is excited about making the switch to the injected nitro combination, and the performance possibilities that come with the combination.
Jones, from Stockton, Calif., first drove the car three weeks ago during the National Time Trials in Phoenix, where he wheeled the Western Stabilization A/Fueler to an early-shutoff 5.49 second elapsed time in only his second pass. Since then, Jones has been like a kid waiting on Christmas for this weekend's Winternationals.
"We're going to be first pair in the first round of qualifying," said Jones. "I think that's great. Jerry [Darien] is really optimistic, and I would have to agree with him. I think we are going to go out there and pretty much leave the tune up in it we had in Phoenix, see what this thing can do, and get it down the track. Hopefully we can get in the upper half of the field during the first session, and just step on it as we go through qualifying. Jerry really has high hopes, he really thinks we can win this deal this weekend. We wouldn't be out here if we didn't think we could win."
With cool conditions forecasted, and the traditional bite of Pomona Raceway, Jones feels that 5.30's are not out of the question this weekend.
"I think that we should expect to see 5.30's with the weather conditions that will be out there," said Jones. "The air should be there, and the track will definitely be there. I really hate to start making predictions right now and jinx myself, or put my foot in my mouth. We'll be happy with the No. 1 qualifier spot, and if it takes a 5.30, then so be it."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Top Alcohol Dragsters. Qualifying will resume with two more sessions on Friday, followed by first round of eliminations on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news from Pomona.
