Whiteley Gains Ground in National Championship

ACTON, MT. -- The final results from the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event from Yellowstone Drag Strip are in. Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Jim Whiteley, of Grand Junction, Colo., took home the coveted Wally trophy, as did Terry Ruckman, who also happens to be from Grand Junction, Colo.

Whiteley was untouchable throughout the course off the weekend, coming out of the No. 1 qualifying position with times that were second to none. His final pass of 5.488 seconds at 260.61 mph was good enough to keep Shawn Cowie, from Richmond, B.C., in the runner up spot. Whiteley's win this weekend will greatly help his efforts in winning the Lucas Oil National Championship which he currently has the point lead in, over defending champion Bill Reichert.

Terry Ruckman made a final pass of 5.812 seconds at 246.62 mph defeating Sean O'Bannon of Ontario, Calif. O'Bannon's Tequila Patron sponsored car accrued enough points this weekend with their No. 2 finish to pull even with Brian Hough, from Junction City, Ore., who they defeated in the first round of action.

In Comp Eliminator action Dale Giroux, of Canyon Creek, Alb., took home the win in his '05 Cavalier. Edmonton, Alb., resident Norm Lapointe found himself in the winner's circle as well with a win over Don Thomas, from Spruce Grove, Alb. Brad Burton, who hails from Golden, Colo., found himself at the top of the Stock Eliminator class with a time of 11.276 seconds.

Super Comp driver Michael Dalrymple continued his success this weekend with a win, hitting a top speed of 166.87 mph in his final pass of the day. John Whitmore, of Mrytle Creek, Ore., fell one win short of victory in a loss to Sidney, Neb., resident Billy Maddox in his '04 Prowler. In Super Street third time was the charm for Nikki Cannon, of Bothell, Wash., in here third divisional final she finally pulled off the victory. Nikki capped off her birthday weekend with the win but was also awarded best appearing car and took home some extra cash for her No.1 qualifying position.

The '90 Kawasaki of Leeland King, from Shelton, Wash., was not to be denied the win as he defeated Gary Moreno, of La Verne, Calif., in the finals. Fort Collins, Colo., resident Dave Slatten hit a top speed of 193.29 mph in the finals on his way to victory while in Ryan Cook, from Rigby, Ida., was also victorious in his attempt to win Top Dragster.

Northwest Division racers head to Champion Raceway in Eagle Point, Ore., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, September 26-27.
