Dave Grubnic leads Team Kalitta with top-half qualifying effort in Norwalk

NORWALK, Ohio, (June 30, 2007) -- At the inaugural running of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at the Northern Ohio landmark Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, native Australian Dave Grubnic will lead the Kalitta Motorsports nitro drag racing contingent into Sunday's final eliminations.

Grubnic, driver of the Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster, took the No. 8 qualifying position in the 16-car final eliminations field with a solid 4.583-second, 329.58-mph time trial lap down the quarter-mile Friday night. Grubnic's speed of 329.58 mph was the fastest of the class during qualifying. He will race No. 9 qualifier Luigi Novelli (4.598 sec., 322.65 mph) in the first round of eliminations tomorrow.

Grubnic's Top Fuel teammate Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools dragster, will begin his quest for the title trophy in Norwalk from the No. 13 qualifying position, 4.618 sec., 320.13 mph. Doug will roll to the starting line in the morning to face off against No. 4 qualifier Larry Dixon (4.561 sec., 323.89 mph) when win-or-go-home eliminations start.

Scott Kalitta, driver of the DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car, failed to qualify for the 16-car Funny Car final eliminations field. Scott's best time trial came in the last of four qualifying sessions, 5.108 sec., 259.31 mph, but it was not enough to get into the tough flopper field.

Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 15 position for eliminations.
