PIPPIN WILL TRY TO RESUME QUALIFYING RUN IN NORWALK
NORWALK, OHIO, June 24, 2008 -Junior Pippin, rider of the PiranaZ Racing/Pippin Racing S&S-proven-performance-powered V-Twin pro stock motorcycle, wants to end his qualifying drought at two races when competition begins Friday for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals here at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, but his thoughts go beyond cracking the field of 16.
Like all the members of the NHRA POWERade drag racing family, Pippin was shaken by last weekend's death of Scott Kalitta whose funny car crashed during qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
"We race because we love it; you've got to have perspective, and racing isn't everything," said the 55-year-old rookie rider. "I try to stay positive, but it's hard. My prayers are with the Kalitta family."
Pippin is well known for keeping a positive outlook. He has said before that every day he gets to race is a blessing.
"I feel good about our chances going into Norwalk, as long as the clocks work this time," joked the Conyers, Ga. native referring to his last attempted qualifying run in Englishtown which was ended by a malfunctioning timing system. "I'm ready to do it again."
Pippin, who drives a dump truck for Pippin Trucking when not at the races, had two consecutive non-qualifying races (after qualifying for his first five national events) and is looking to turn things around.
"We've had issues since Chicago (Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals)," he said. "We had electrical issues at Chicago, mechanical problems at Englishtown and when we thought we got it figured out during the first couple of qualifying runs in Englishtown, the track timer failed.
"Now, we have everything straightened out, we switched the engine and fixed the electrical stuff, thanks to the G2 guys. Now we're ready."
This event marks the seventh Pro Stock Motorcycle race in the 2008 POWERade National Hot Rod Association season. Pippin is currently 13 in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Countdown to the Championship point standings with 144 points.
