NORWALK, Ohio (June 30, 2007) -- Greg Anderson drove his Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac GTO to the No. 1 position at the inaugural Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals being held this weekend at the newest venue on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series -- Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.
For Anderson, he started out in the top spot but had trouble through the remaining qualifying sessions, holding on to take his eighth No. 1 of 2007 and his sixth straight going back to the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Atlanta in May.
In the opening sessions on Friday, the three-time NHRA POWERade champion (2003-2005) recorded his best elapsed time of qualifying, a 6.654-second pass. In the evening session he never left the starting line when ignition problems plagued his KB Racing Pontiac.
In the first session today, the third overall, Anderson hazed the tires, recovered, then smoked the big Goodyears and coasted to the finish line. In the final session, with the wheels up in the air, Anderson's Summit Racing Pontiac veered toward the wall forcing him to shutdown, again coasting to the finish line.
"One thing that you would kind of like to do during qualifying is to find out how far you can go in both directions, under and over," said Anderson. "Usually you don't have the guts to go far enough to find the edge on both sides. We did it today, by accident I guess, but we did it. It may end up being a good thing because we definitely know where the boundary is and sometimes you go into Sunday not knowing how far you can go -- where the boundary is. We definitely established one on both sides today. We should have learned from that. It may have been the best thing that ever happened to us. We'll find out tomorrow."
The opening round match-up will find Anderson against Erica Enders. Enders qualified No. 16 with an elapsed time of 6.705 seconds.
