NOBLE, Okla. - Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard hopes to improve on her semifinal finish at the U.S. Nationals with her first win of the year during this weekend's final Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble, Oklahoma.
The Tulsa, Oklahoma, registered nurse has had an up and down season. Howard started the year off with a bang by running an elapsed time of 5.416 to qualify her No. 1 at the Division 4 FMDRS at the Texas Motorplex [Ennis, Texas], making her the third quickest Blown Alcohol Dragster in the world. Then her season took a turn for the worse, as she was plagued with a string of first and second round losses, and many bad breaks. Through hard work and perseverance, Howard made it to the semifinals of the biggest race of the year, the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana, and hopes that race was the turning point she has been looking for all year.
Howard said, "I don't take any race any different from any other. I just like to run my own race, and not worry about who is in the other lane. I don't take for granted making it to the semifinals of the U.S. Nationals, it's just that every race is a new ballgame. We are going to go into the race with a positive attitude, do our best, and take it one round at a time."
With the tuning help of two time World Champion Tom Conway, Howard looks for a strong performance in front of her home state fans in Noble.
"I think the car should be able to run in the 5.50's," commented Howard. "It really depends on the temperature of the track. The Oklahoma weather can change at any minute. There will be a few A/Fuel cars there, and if the air gets really good, they will really step up, so it's hard to say what the track can hold."
Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will be ran on Sunday. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for day by day updates on the racing action in Noble.
