Howard set to rally for Division 4 title.
NOBLE, Okla. - One year ago, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard experienced the worst race of her career after experiencing a horrific crash at Thunder Valley Raceway Park just outside of Oklahoma City, Okla. Going into this year's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer there, Howard, the defending Division 4 Champ, has a chance to make a last race rally to repeat as Champion.
The scenario for Howard, who lives just down the road in Tulsa, Okla., is very simple: she must win the race and prevent current points leader Lee Callaway from reaching the finals. Despite the brevity of the situation, Howard and her team plan to go into the race with their normal game plan.
"We have to treat it like any other race," said Howard. "We go into every race to win, so it really shouldn't put any more pressure on us to perform. All each one of us on this team is do our jobs the best we can do. We'll take it one round at a time, and try to put all the points in the background."
Nonetheless, Howard acknowledges the task at hand will be very tough.
"It will be a tough race, but they are all tough," commented Howard. "This level of competition in the TAD class as a whole has really increased over the last few years. Nowadays, at any given race there is a tough field. Noble is historically a tough race because it is always in the middle of Championship implications. We're going to go give it our best."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
