LUCAS, HARKER LEAD QUALIFIERS AT THUNDER VALLEY RACEWAY
NOBLE, Okla. -- In the final rounds of qualifying at Thunder Valley Raceway Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Morgan Lucas, Brownsburg, Ind., wheeled his Top Alcohol Dragster to the No. 1 qualifying spot while Steve Harker of Gainesville, Ga., moved to the top of the Top Alcohol Funny Car field. There were 17 dragsters and 14 funny cars vying for a spot in the eight-car elimination field.
Lucas, who also campaigns a Top Fuel dragster in NHRA's PowerAde Series, laid down a 5.366-second, 260.11 mph pass to catapult himself from the No. 12 spot. Kate Harker, Gainesville, Ga., is the No. 2 qualifier with a 5.388-second, 265.56 mph run. Top Alcohol Funny Car top qualifier Steve Harker is her father, and her twin sister, Diana, did not make the Top Alcohol Dragster show, ending qualifying in the No. 15 spot.
The Funny Car driving Harker set the pace in the class with a 5.704-second, 252.31 mph pass. Defending division champion Jimmy Jones, a pharmacist from Cleburne, Texas, just missed the top spot with a 5.715-second, 251.67 mph effort.
In Comp Eliminator, Jim Cowan, Dewey, Ariz., remained in the No. 1 position as did Super Stock racer Jimmy DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., and Sportsman Motorcycle rider Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn. In Stock Eliminator, Harvey "Speedy" Emmons III of Friendswood, Texas, took over the top spot. Top Sportsman competitor Johnny Adkins, Linden, Tenn., moved into the No. 1 spot and so did Joey Marcotte, Denham Springs, La., in Top Dragster.
Racing continues Sunday at Thunder Valley Raceway. Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.
Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Valley Raceway are $20. Children 5 to 10 years old are $5 each day and kids under 5 are admitted free with a paid adult. Military personnel receive a $5 discount.
