Worsham Puts Toyota In Norwalk NHRA Winner’s Circle
Del Worsham stormed to his fourth win of the season and extended his Top Fuel championship league to 61 points in today’s NHRA Full Throttle Series Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at the Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
The victory culminated another dominating weekend for Worsham as he captured the number one qualifier honors on Saturday. He has advanced to the finals five times this season, winning four in his Al-Anabi Racing Toyota dragster in his first full season of Top Fuel competition. Worsham has now held the point lead since winning at Gainesville in the second race of the season.
The long-time Funny Car driver defeated Luigi Novelli, Antron Brown, Morgan Lucas and Spencer Massey on the way to the victory.
Worsham’s Al-Anabi Racing teammate Larry Dixon advanced to the semi-finals today for the third consecutive race before falling to Spencer Massey. He had earlier defeated Bob Vandergriff and Brandon Bernstein.
After Shawn Langdon and Morgan Lucas won their opening round matches, the Morgan Lucas Racing team was guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, unfortunately the duo had to square off against one another in the second round with Lucas advancing. With both cars qualifying in the top five it was the team’s strongest showing since Lucas defeated Langdon in the final to win the season-opener at Pomona.
In Funny Car, Cruz Pedregon advanced to the semi-finals for the sixth time this season before falling to Mike Neff after dropping a cylinder mid-run. He defeated Tim Wilkerson and top qualifier Robert Hight on the way to the semi-finals. His Snap-on Toyota closed to within 49 points of second-place with his second straight semi-final showing.
After a week off, the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will resume its season at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., July 8-10.
Del Worsham, Al-Anabi Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: “It was an emotional weekend with a lot of really tight races. We even lost lane choice a couple of times. To make five finals in the first 10 races and win four is just amazing and it’s a testimonial to what a great job the whole All-Anabi Toyota team is doing. I’m just the lucky passenger. The whole field is just so competitive right now. Every round feels like the final.”
Cruz Pedregon, Snap-On Tools Toyota Camry Solara Funny Car: “None of these rounds are easy. You have to come out here swinging. We had a good weekend, but not a great one. Our Snap-On Toyota did everything we asked in each run, but we lost a cylinder on a fairly minor issue in the semis. But its better we get the little things out of the way now rather than at the end of the year. We didn't get the win, but we're close. It's a good feeling to know that right now we have one of the three or four best cars in America."
Antron Brown, Matco Tools Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: “We had a monster match in the first round (with Doug Kalitta), which we won and then we lost a good drag race in round two. That’s racing.”
Morgan Lucas, Geico/Lucas Oil Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: "The car was doing great, and the guys are doing an outstanding job. The more laps you make on the track, the quicker we're going to get, the more stuff we're going to learn, and the more of a threat we're going to be on everybody else."
