SPENCER MASSEY BRINGS COUNTDOWN LEAD TO THIS WEEKEND’S AUTO-PLUS® NHRA Nationals
MOHNTON, Pa., September 27, 2011 – Spencer Massey rolls the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster into Southeastern Pennsylvania for this weekend’s 27th annual Auto-Plus® NHRA Nationals holding the lead in the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.
A final-round visit in last Sunday’s Dallas race propelled the 29-year-old driver around his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown into the first points lead of his young career.
“If we can continue to put the FRAM/Prestone dragster into the finals for the rest of the Countdown, we’ll be in great shape,” said the DSR driver who has reached the finals in the first two (of six) Countdown races. ““This entire season has just been incredible for me and I want it to continue, right up to being handed the “big” Wally for winning it all.”
Massey last visited Maple Grove Raceway here in 2009, his rookie-of-the-year season (he did not have a ride in 2010), and finished runner up to Larry Dixon.
“Larry was leading in the points at that time and I was in seventh place,” the Fort Worth native said reflecting back on his initial season. “Times have really changed and we definitely have a car which can go all the way.
“We knew at the beginning of the season the FRAM/Prestone dragster was good based on its record and the ability and experience of Phil and Todd (Shuler and Okuhara, co-crew chiefs) as well as the whole team, but for me, driving a car with this much power was something new.
“First, I dreamed of winning a race and then, when the winning began, I began dreaming of a championship.”
Three wins and three other final-round appearances have contributed to his dream season which now has Massey seven points ahead of Brown in a close race in which 72 points separate the first five (Massey, Brown, Del Worsham, Dixon and DSR teammate Tony Schumacher) drivers.
“This entire season has just been incredible for me and I want it to continue,” he said. “But we can’t rest on our laurels, not with Antron, Del, Larry and Tony breathing right down my neck. We’ve got to come out here in Reading and get the job done, again!”
