Spencer Massey Secures Fourth Starting Position For Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals
Handling the controls of the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster, Spencer Massey banked the fourth starting spot here Saturday during final qualifying for tomorrow’s 32nd-annual MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.
Massey, with a 4.010-second run at 303.64 miles per hour in the last session, created a pairing with 13th-place qualifier Brandon Bernstein in the first round of final eliminations starting at 11 a.m. MT.
“We’re ready to do it,” said the Fort Worth resident. “The track here in Denver is hot, greasy and challenging, but I feel we have a good race-day package to put out there. We only got down the track twice in qualifying, but they were both respectable runs. We were particularly happy with that last one.”
It will be the second time this season Massey and Bernstein have faced off on race day. The former got the best of Bernstein in the semifinals at Old Bridge Township (N.J.) Raceway Park last month on the way to his second victory of the year.
“You can never let your guard down against anyone, but especially against a driver like Brandon,” said Massey, who is second in the standings. “Brandon and his team have improved considerably as the season has progressed. They can definitely come out and whip you if you aren’t prepared.”
After recording a rare first-round loss at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. two weeks ago, Massey would clearly like to start the Western Swing off on a high note.
“For sure,” he said. “Both of my DSR teammates (Antron Brown and Tony Schumacher) have Western Swing sweeps to their credit, so we would love to join that elite crowd. But, you first have to get the Denver race before thinking about the races in Sonoma (Calif.) and Seattle. It’s a matter of remaining focused on the job at hand.”
