Ron Capps Takes Third-Starting Spot For Route 66 NHRA Nationals
Ron Capps qualified the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car third for Sunday’s 14th annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals here at Route 66 Raceway.
The Don Schumacher Racing driver used Friday’s second-round run of 4.135 seconds at 301.94 miles per hour to secure a first-round match with 14th qualifier Terry Haddock in the final eliminations which commence at noon ET.
According to Capps, it was Friday’s first run, a 4.218 at 291.32, which set the stage for the remaining three qualifying rounds.
“By putting the car at the top of the field in the heat of Friday’s first round, we then had the luxury of ‘going after it’ both in the cool evening sessions and again in the heat of the Saturday-afternoon one.
“It was really cool to see Tim (Richards, crew chief) take on the track without having to worry about getting into the show.”
Saturday’s two rounds, 6.360 at 101.07 and 4.480 at 198.50, did not provide any improvement, nor did they dampen Capps’s spirit.
“I’m just pumped up about racing Sunday,” said the Southern Californian. “The entire NAPA team is excited and our confidence is high. Tim and the guys have done a great job getting us ready, dealing with the hot conditions (track temperatures exceeded 125 in both afternoon sessions); we just have to execute on race day.
“Like I said, it was a real luxury for us to be in the top three early from the first qualifying round so we could just work on getting quicker.”
Capps enters Sunday’s competition, the midway point of the 22-race NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season, holding the sixth spot in the Funny Car standings, four round wins out of fifth.
