Sonoma A Homecoming And Motivator For Hight

In the early 90’s Robert Hight would drive to Infineon Raceway to see the stars of the NHRA race. The Alturas, Calif., native would dream about getting involved in a sport he felt a huge passion and respect for.

Flash forward to just over a decade and Hight will return to Infineon Raceway as a Funny Car champion and the No. 2 Funny Car driver in the Full Throttle points standings. He was won four times in 2011 already and in Topeka he picked up the 200th Funny Car win for John Force Racing.

“I have my dream job. I work for John Force Racing. I used to stand on the ropes and watch these guys like John, Kenny Bernstein, and Don Prudhomme,” said Hight, the 2008 FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals winner. “Now I am the guy on the other side of the ropes and I take that responsibility seriously. I have this job driving this Auto Club of Southern California Ford Mustang because of the fans and their support. We have the best fans in motorsports for sure.”

“This is the 60th anniversary of the NHRA and there are legends at the races like Don Garlits and Shirley Muldowney. It is really cool to be a part of this sport and to be having some success this season.”

Hight and his fellow JFR Funny Car drivers have won nine of twelve races this season and have had a representative in eleven of twelve final rounds. There has been in JFR Mustang in eight straight finals and they have won six straight events.

“We are on a roll no doubt, but the key is to be on a roll in the Countdown. We are running strong now and we are keeping our eye on doing well these last four races before the Countdown start but trust me you have to have it together in the Countdown.”

In 2009 Hight raced into the Countdown grabbing the No. 10 spot before winning three times to win his first Full Throttle Funny Car championship. Those three wins were Hight’s only wins in 2009. In 2010 Hight won four times and rolled into the Countdown as the No. 1 seed only to falter down the stretch as his mentor and team leader John Force won the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car championship 15th time.

“Last year we got what we wanted going into the Countdown as the top Funny Car but we just weren’t consistent when it counted. This year we are trying to combine 2009 and 2010,” said the 22-time NHRA national event winner. “We want to win as many races as we can in the regular season and then dominate in the Countdown races. The tough part will be winning races when the competition is so tough. You look at Mike Neff and that Castrol GTX Mustang. They have been great. John is winning now plus you have guys like Jack Beckman, Matt Hagan and Cruz Pedregon all at the top of the field. It will be a battle but Jimmy and I will be ready for it.”
