Struggles continue for Lucas, GEICO Top Fuel dragster
LAS VEGAS – Morgan Lucas' bad luck continued at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday after he failed to put the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster into eliminations at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals.
"Nobody is going to put more pressure on us than us," Lucas said. "The guys on the team are doing an outstanding job while I am learning how to tune the racecar."
It's the third time in the last four races Lucas has not qualified for the race.
"Problems like this start at the top," Lucas said. "I'm learning. I'm just not learning fast enough right now.
After not making the top 12 on Friday, Lucas had to start from scratch on Saturday with two chances to make the field. The GEICO rail smoked the tires on the first run. In his last-chance effort, Lucas ran a 3.922 second pass at 305.56 mph. No. 16 qualifier, teammate Shawn Langdon, made the field with a 3.897 second lap at 289.01 mph.
"I'd really like to get into a string of races where the air is more consistent," Lucas said. "As a learning experience there is not much better than what we're going through.
"I know I can figure it out. I just don't know how long it's going to take to do that. I really appreciate the support GEICO has given us through this situation."
Lucas will move on to the site of his greatest success of the season, Pomona, Calif., for the Nov. 10-13 NHRA World Finals. Lucas won the NHRA Winternationals to open the season.
