INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 4) – Hometown favoroite Morgan Lucas put the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster safely into the 16-car field of the 57th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, which will be contested Monday at Lucas Oil Raceway. This is the first race Lucas is tuning the car himself with help from his crew.

"We've been crossing things off our list as we go this weekend," Lucas said. "We've learned how to fix the problems we've encountered this weekend."

Lucas goes into the field in ninth place on the strength of his Friday night pass of 3.981 seconds at 313.80 mph.

"We're trying to learn how to problem-solve," Lucas said. "The first run of the weekend went really good. We based it on our testing. Since then we've had to just try to learn to get around some things."

In the process Lucas has won a spot in the Countdown to the Championship.

"That's a relief, and it's nice to do it at home, but it would be even better if we're able to do some good tomorrow," Lucas said. "But you have to do good to prove your worth. We've got to go and be on our A game tomorrow."

Lucas draws No. 8 qualifier Doug Kalitta, who ran a best lap of 3.885 at 319.37 mph. The two will most likely be the first pair down the track Monday.

"If I hit the tree the way I did the last round today and we put together a car that stays on all eight cylinders to the finish line, we'll be all right," Lucas said.

Monday's eliminations get under way at 11 a.m. EDT from Lucas Oil Raceway.
