Morgan Lucas falls victim to record run in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 18) – Morgan Lucas and his crew are learning how to get the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster to go fast, and after Sunday's O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, the crew now has a new target to shoot for.
Lucas, who qualified No. 16, fell to Tony Schumacher in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations on Sunday as Schumacher had a record-setting 3.775 second pass at 327.90 mph.
"We anticipated they would try to run a 3.70 of some sort," Lucas said. "We had to be realistic; we've never run that fast. We went up there and made some pretty good sized moves from Saturday."
The GEICO dragster crossed the line in 3.869 seconds at 314.90 mph.
"We made the motor happier," Lucas said. "We went down the track, kept them honest and finished in the same frame on the TV show. The guys have done a great job this weekend.
"Qualifying better might have put us in a little better position, but we're making gains every weekend."
Next on the schedule for GEICO/Lucas Oil team is the AAA of Texas NHRA Nationals at Texas Motorplex from Sept. 23-25.
