LOCAL RACER SPENCER MASSEY STARTS SEVENTH IN AAA TEXAS NHRA FALL NATIONALS
ENNIS, TEXAS, September 24, 2011 – Local life-long resident Spencer Massey, in front of countless family and friends, today qualified the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster seventh for Sunday’s AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals here at the Texas Motorplex.
Hailing from nearby Fort Worth, the 29-year-old overcame the intense Texas heat to run a 3.905-second final-round lap at 316.60 miles per hour to earn a first-round match with 10th-qualifier Shawn Langdon in the final eliminations scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CDT.
“We went down the track all four times, which especially today is an accomplishment,” said the Don Schumacher Racing driver. “Today’s conditions, which were a real challenge for Phil and Todd (Shuler and Okuhara, co-crew chiefs), look pretty close to what we’ll see tomorrow for the race which is why I am confident in our chances.”
The top-half-of-the-field standing means lane choice in round one, considered crucial at the Texas Motorplex under a hot sun.
“Obviously, we want to win that first-round match with Shawn and retain lane choice moving forward,” explained Massey, who comes into the weekend third in the Countdown to the Championship standings. “Every round really matters now; those points are all crucial.”
The FRAM/Prestone dragster performed well under the intense conditions and in addition to the qualifying run today returned laps of 3.990 at 300.73 mph and 3.966 at 304.80 mph Friday and an earlier one today of 3.918 at 316.45 mph.
“It was REALLY encouraging how the FRAM/Prestone team kept getting my car quicker and faster for each session, even as the weather got trickier,” he added. “I’m just so excited and having fun out there. I want to do great for Texas and for all of my folks who have come out to cheer me on.”
