Countdown berths on the minds of Lucas Oil racers Langdon, Morgan
Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel driver Shawn Langdon can do himself and his teammate a lot of good Sunday with a round win or two at the 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Northwest Nationals.
Langdon, who qualified 10th on Saturday, faces Dave Grubnic in the first round of eliminations. Grubnic is chasing Langdon's teammate, Morgan Lucas for a berth in the Countdown to the Championship, so a win would benefit both Langdon and Lucas.
"I seems like we keep racing Grubby every week," Langdon said. "If we can knock him out in the first round, it'll help us out and it will help Morgan out. He's beat us two of the last three times we've raced him, so stopping him will be important."
Langdon had a best pass of 3.904 seconds at 313.07 mph to earn his qualifying spot. Grubnic is in the field on the strength of a 3.891-second lap at 314.17 mph.
"On the first run on Saturday we were pretty much on pace to run a 3.89 then had a part break and it shut us off early," Langdon said. "We've changed a few little things with the fuel curve trying to make the motor a little happier.
"We're trying not to beat ourselves, because the track is so tricky this weekend. We're probably a little soft in some areas, but out goal has been to get some data by getting down the track."
Langdon's Lucas Oil teammate, Larry Morgan, put his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang car into the No. 13 spot in the Pro Stock field.
"This track is so unpredictable, we're just not having fun right now," Morgan said. "I'm just thankful we've got the car into the field. We'll give her all we've got tomorrow."
Morgan, who is stalking a spot in the Countdown himself, had a best pass of 6.579 seconds at 210.01 mph. He will face No. 4 qualifier Allen Johnson, who put up a best time of 6.543 seconds at 211.69 mph, in the first round on Sunday.
