ENNIS, TX --- Robert Hight and the AAA Texas Ford Mustang led the way on Friday for John Force Racing at the 26th annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals. In the second qualifying session Hight tripped the lights in 4.154 seconds at 304.32 mph just a few ticks behind Funny Car journeyman Jon Capps’ 4.152 seconds. With conditions expected to warm up significantly getting a solid run in tonight was a key to success for the weekend.

“We are at our sponsor race, AAA Texas, and we are a top four qualifier. That was a big run for us because we had to run early (in the session). I am glad that time held up. (Crew chief) Jimmy (Prock) put the strongest tune-up he felt would get us a good position,” said Hight, the 2009 Fall Nationals winner. “We can tune from this but tomorrow it will be hot and we will be racing for bonus points. I am glad all three John Force Racing Mustangs are in the top eight going into Saturday and it will be tough to make some moves but it is not out of the question. We will be racing hard tomorrow and getting ready for Sunday.”

Full Throttle Funny Car points leader Mike Neff secured the provisional No. 5 position with a 4.163 second pass in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. Both Neff and Hight reaped the benefits of making their second runs in the left lane at the all-concrete facility. Neff also had an eye on the weather forecast when he was tuning his Funny Car.

“It is going to be a lot hotter tomorrow. It was 110 degrees today but it will be 130 degrees tomorrow. It will be hot again on Sunday except for the first round. This was all about the night run. We’ll be running tomorrow at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. when it is the hottest part of the day,” said Neff, the points leader and five time winner in 2011. “That run tonight was pretty much for qualifying position. You want to make sure ideally you get lane choice. I would have liked to have run a little better but you know what, I’ll take it. We are 5th right now and we have something to look at.”

John Force was the best JFR Funny Car in the first session posting the 7th quickest time. In the second session Force made one of the quickest runs in the right lane crossing the finish line in 4.173 seconds which was good enough to stay in the top half of the field, No. 8, at the end of the day. Force is running a black carbon fiber Castrol GTX HIGH MILEAGE Ford Mustang.

“Those runs weren’t anything real exciting but with the heat wave tomorrow to run 4.17 you want to stay up in the top half. Ron and Guido (co-crew chiefs Ron Douglas and Dean Antonelli) found some stuff and we went back to a lighter body,” said Force. “We will run the 15-time championship body again but right now we have to focus on this Countdown. If we can’t get into a position to win then we need to be able to take out the competition for Robert and Neff because they are way up there. I have to come from two races behind but I’m still the champ.”
